One of my regular freelance clients was the southeast regional office of Weyerhaeuser, the Paper Pulp Division. Here is a script excerpt from a Customer Orientation video that I wrote and produced. Customers were assumed to be familar with the process, so you may find used some unfamilar terms.
--------------EXCERPT
Pulp production is dependent upon four main processes. Wood
yard, Pulping, Pulp Drying and Finishing.
Pulp drying & finishing is the final stage of the pulp
stream. The pulp slurry is pumped to a paper machine where
the water in the pulp is removed by vacuuming & pressing,
thereby forming a wet paper sheet. At this point the paper
is still about 50% water. The wet sheet is then carried into
a dryer where hot air floats the sheet and evaporates one
ton of the water per minute. The dryer is four stories tall and
floats nearly a half mile of pulp.
The fluff pulp is wound onto spools in the reel area to
form "jumbo rolls". Approximately 20 tons of pulp are on
each spool. Samples of the jumbo roll are taken for quality
testing to ensure it meets customer specifications.
Once a jumbo roll is completed, it moves from the storage
area to the winder. At the winder, the jumbo roll is cut
into sets of smaller rolls. These individual rolls are
called baby rolls. Core tags are inserted in each core and
checked for easy identification by the customer.
When a set of baby rolls is completed at the winder, they
are discharged onto the sorting deck where the rolls are
prepared and taped.
In the past, the outer layer of the roll was taped with 9.5
cm. wide tail tape. Today, the outer layer of each roll is
removed on the sorting deck, and the tails are taped with a
2.54 cm. non-re-pulpable tail tape. Once the tails are
taped, they are released to the packaging line where the
finishing process continues.
While the sets of rolls continue through the packaging
line, another set of rolls has been created at the winder
and moved to the sorting deck. The rolls are prepped by the
operator to ensure that all creases and wrinkles in the
outer layer are removed prior to add the tail taping.
Rolls are weighed and moved to the stretch wrapper where
they are packaged in bundles. Once the bundle
is wrapped and labeled, it is turned and moved to the base
wrapper where a protective layer of plastic is wrapped onto
each bottom roll to prevent damage during shipping.
The rolls are then transported by clamp truck to the
warehouse where they will be loaded into rail cars, trucks
or containers for shipment to our customers.
